In this stunning collection, Sara Claytor perfectly captures the archetype of the Wise Crone—not to be confused with any sort of pathetic figure, but a human being at the pinnacle of her earthly power—a woman who dances on her own grave because she hasn’t wasted a moment of her life. Embracing love, loss, joy, and sorrow with equal ferocity, these poems have much to teach us if we take the time to ‘listen.’

—Terri Kirby Erickson, Author of A Lake of Light and Clouds

Lost Whales

no one would understand
how deep we flow
you with your Irish cynicism
rejected Catholic guilt, famous Irish name
making me laugh with those hard vowels
me with my marshmallow dialect
Jesus Lady wailing from Southern sin
wet and wild you said
I was your wet and wild woman
I trained you well

Close to the Bone

grandmother nested in a nursing home
in her last years, a wounded bird
wings broken, existing on crumbs
a month after the birth
of my blue-eyes daughter
she flew away on her unknown roads
